Food for Thought – Konica Minolta

Alleviating Child Hunger through Food for Thought

Hunger in the United States is on the rise, with studies showing that one in six Americans face hunger. Hunger does not only exist in the home, it is often brought to school, and can negatively affect a child’s ability to learn. In fact, three in five elementary and middle school teachers say that they see children come to school hungry.

While more than 20 million students receive a free or reduced-price lunch on an average school day, fewer than half of these students are provided with breakfast, which is often considered to be the most important meal of the day. Even when schools close for vacation, hunger among children does not disappear. The American Federation of Teachers notes that as few as “one in seven low-income children receives food assistance during the summer.”

To tackle this national issue, during July 2014, Konica Minolta offices across the United States participated in Food for Thought, a nationwide summer food drive. The goal of the initiative was to collect 5,000 non-perishable items to create nutritious, child-friendly breakfasts and lunches. Donations from members were sent to local food banks to support summer meal programs in communities nationwide.

The initiative proved to be a great success, with 9,200 food items collected and distributed, nearly doubling the goal of collecting 5,000 items. As a company, we will continue to give back to the community through initiatives like Food for Thought throughout the year.
